Looking from its top to the bottom this piece shows the impact of reduction firing grade by grade: the tan surfaces have only been subjected to a lightly oxygen-starving atmosphere, the black ones have been heavily reduced, while the silver shining foot has been totally carbonized. The contrast surface painting is caused by the sawdust and wood shavings which have been introduced to protect the work from contact with oxygen as they’ve been gradually burning out and shrinking downwards.
